FOUR NEW SCOUTS JOINED THE PATROLS when they were deemed trained enough not to get themselves killed. Java found herself with an older woman named Eva Prineville. Eva was twenty years old, and felt she was a born leader.

The trouble started immediately when Java led her patrol into the forest. Eva decided to take control and confronted Java while the rest of the patrol formed a half-circle around them.

“Listen, you little twit. I’m far too old to be taking orders from a weeping little virgin like you.” Eva stood proud and tall, trying to establish herself as the new leader of the patrol.

Java had been warned what to expect by Ari. “Eva, shut up.” Java kept her voice just above a whisper. “We are not in camp now. If you have a problem with the arrangements, discuss them with Sergeant Sheridan. Until then, you will not endanger this patrol. Is that understood?”

Eva stood straighter and glared down at Java. “Now listen...” she began in a loud voice, only to suddenly find herself flat on her back with Morgan kneeling over her.

“You heard Java. Shut up.” Morgan’s hoarse whisper was barely audible. “There are people out here who would love to kill us. While that may not matter to you, it matters to us. Return to camp.”

Eva saw something in Morgan’s eyes that convinced her that discretion was the better part of getting stomped, and slunk back to camp.

Morgan watched her go. “We’re going to have trouble with her, Java.”

The trouble began as soon as they returned from patrol. Sergeant Sheridan summoned Java to her tent. Eva was there, looking smug.

“Java, what in the hells do you think you’re doing? You are supposed to be training a new scout.”

“Sergeant Sheridan, Eva won’t take orders from a ‘weeping little virgin’ like me. She feels that her greater age and experience make her the leader of the patrol. She disregards proper procedure in the field and has endangered the patrol. It was only Corporal Roseville’s authority and greater age that convinced her to return to camp. Otherwise we would have probably been ambushed as Eva stomped and shouted her way across the countryside.” Java was angry, and didn’t hold anything back.

Eva glared at Java. “You lying little shit! You set that hulking slut on me and had me beaten. I have the bruises to prove it. And I am in charge. I’m supposed to be learning how to run a patrol, not following you around like that damned dog.”

Java turned and glared at Eva. “You don’t learn how to lead a patrol by getting everyone killed,” she shouted, surprising Sergeant Sheridan. Java never raised her voice. “As for that damned dog, she has a great deal more sense than you do.
